Chapter Nine

MARK SUTTER HAD done what he could to dress the wound of the shot gold thief. The man lay back against the wall of the cabin and looked like he would faint.

‘He didn’t tell me it would be like this,’ he complained. ‘Everything was going to fine and easy.’

The other man, tied on the other side of the cabin said: ‘Get them fellers away from the cabin, Mark, an’ git us outa here.’ Sutter straightened up.

‘Take it easy,’ he said. ‘Everythin’s goin’ to be fine. Just keep your nerve, boys.’

He walked to the door and said to the men out there: ‘Excitement’s over, boys.’

‘You goin’ to try ’em today?’ a man asked.

‘I reckon the trial’ll be tomorrow at the earliest,’ Sutter told him.

‘They should oughta hang the bastards,’ another said. ‘A few stretched necks’ll scare the rest of this scum off.’

Sutter agreed with them. Those two fellows in there would hang all right. McFane was a strangler if he’d ever seen one. The men said that was a good thing. A row of those sonsabitches hanging in everybody’s sight was the only thing that would stop claim-jumping and killing.

Sutter walked across the flat to the blacksmith’s shop. Catch Frazer, the giant smith, stripped almost to the waist and Sweating even in the chill of the day, was sharpening picks. Catch looked up as he entered and growled deep in his throat. Sutter was a little afraid of him. There wasn’t a man in the gulch who wasn’t. Frazer was savage and unpredictable.

Sutter looked around to make sure they were alone and said: ‘McAllister left town.’

Frazer said: ‘I know. Goldberg packed gold out. It must be on the stage by now. It adds.’

‘McAllister took Collins and Rebault.’

‘I know that too. We’ll make a ruckus. You come runnin’. The boys’ll git ’em out,’ the blacksmith told him.

Sutter hesitated.

‘I don’t like this,’ he said. ‘McAllister’s getting close to us.’ Frazer grinned suddenly and terribly.

‘Kill him then,’ he said.

Sutter went to speak, thought better of it and turned on his heel. He walked back to the cabin. There were still a half-dozen men outside. They troubled him. He found that he was getting a little rattled and the realization upset him further. He knew that he was organizationally in the company of several hundred resolute men most of whom would stand together and obey the orders of their leader. But somehow, in that moment, the knowledge didn’t help him. It was McAllister who had made him lose confidence. He went into the cabin and one of the prisoners, the man with the wounded shoulder, asked: ‘Well?’ His face was screwed up with pain.

‘It’s all fixed. You don’t have to be scared of anything.’

He found a bottle of whiskey on a shelf and took a long pull at it, but the fiery liquor didn’t help much. The two prisoners demanded a drink and he gave it to them. He wished the men outside would go away. They might cause trouble when the boys arrived.

Then a thought struck him.
